City walking tour long description

Are you looking for an engaging guided city walk in Arnhem? Many people think Arnhem grew up along the Rhine, but did you know the city actually originated along the St. Jansbeek? Since 2017, this stream flows visibly through the city center again, allowing you to see where it all began during the walk.

Arnhem has many nicknames, such as “Park City,” “Trolley City,” and “Fashion City”. On this city walk, you’ll discover why. We’ll pass the city’s landmarks, including the impressive Park Tower and Rhine Tower, and of course, the grand Eusebius Church. Although Arnhem was heavily affected during World War II, there are still plenty of historical gems to admire. You’ll even get to “see the monkeys”—not in Burgers’ Zoo, but right in the city center. The “7 Streets” area will not be missed, with its beautiful façades and boutique shops. The Korenmarkt, now known for its cozy pubs and restaurants, was once where grain was stored and traded.

During this guided tour of Arnhem, you’ll discover that the city is full of surprises, where old and new blend seamlessly.

City walking tour long description

During this impressive tour of Arnhem, you’ll gain a clear understanding of what happened in and around the city during World War II. Arnhem played a central role in Operation Market Garden, the largest airborne operation of the war. The plan was for Allied paratroopers to capture the bridges at Eindhoven, Nijmegen, and Arnhem, creating a rapid route into Germany.

However, the Battle of Arnhem did not go as planned. Bad weather in southern England delayed the operation, communication problems caused chaos, and the German defenses were stronger than expected. Only one British unit, led by Major John Frost, reached the bridge in Arnhem, now known as the John Frost Bridge. They held out for four days and five nights, cut off from the rest of the troops, without reinforcements or supplies. Ultimately, they had to abandon the bridge. Arnhem was literally and figuratively “a bridge too far.”

On this World War II walking tour of Arnhem, you’ll walk past key sites of the Battle of Arnhem, hear personal and moving stories, and discover how the war permanently changed the city and its inhabitants. This tour brings history to life—a unique experience for anyone wanting to learn more about Operation Market Garden and the courageous fight that took place here.
