City walking tour long description

Do you want to discover Kampen in a unique way? Join a guided city walk in Kampen and truly get to know this beautiful Hanseatic city. Kampen is known for its unique protected cityscape, full of charming alleyways where you can still see the old buttresses that were once installed to prevent subsidence.

During the walk, you will hear surprising stories. Did you know that Kampen still has a cigar factory where cigars are rolled by hand every week? This isn’t a case of making your own cigars, but a craft that is still very much alive. It is also striking how many beautiful buildings from the Jugendstil period the city possesses, with richly decorated facades full of floral and plant motifs.

Your guide will tell you all about the famous Kampen onions and humorous stories about the so-called stupidity of the inhabitants. You will hear stories about the cow on the tower and the sturgeon with a bell around its neck. Yet, Kampen was once famous for its sturgeon fishing. Sturgeons up to three to four meters long swam in the IJssel River. After the catch, they were tied with ropes to poles in the river to keep them fresh for as long as possible.

During this tour of Kampen, you will also admire the impressive city gates. Kampen once had as many as 21; today, you can still admire three of them. No wonder Hendrick Avercamp, the famous deaf-mute painter of the 17th century, captured Kampen so often in his works. He already knew: Kampen is beautiful.

Let yourself be surprised during this guided city walk in Kampen and discover the true story behind this special Hanseatic city.
