Nijmegen is not just any city – it is the oldest city in the Netherlands, full of stories, atmosphere, and surprises on every street corner. From Roman remains to trendy coffee shops: these ten reasons show why a day (or weekend!) in Nijmegen is absolutely worth it.
At the Valkhof, high above the Waal, the story of Nijmegen began over 2,000 years ago. Here, the Romans built their military camp Ulpia Noviomagus, the predecessor of the present-day city. You can still find remnants of old walls there and enjoy a beautiful view over the river. Also visit the Valkhof Museum, where the Roman past comes to life with artifacts, stories, and interactive exhibitions.

A real must-see is Museum De Bastei, on the Waalkade. This museum tells not only the story of Nijmegen through the centuries, but also of the river that shaped the city. You literally walk through layers of time; from Roman walls to medieval city gates. Ideal for anyone who loves history, nature, and architecture.
Nijmegen wouldn’t be Nijmegen without Mariken van Nieumeghen, the city’s most famous legend. Her bronze statue stands proudly on the Grote Markt, next to the impressive Stevenskerk. According to the medieval story, Mariken lived with the devil for seven years but eventually found redemption. A beautiful symbol of humanity, seduction, and forgiveness, deeply rooted in the city’s culture.

The lower town of Nijmegen is a labyrinth of atmospheric streets. Here, you can still feel the medieval atmosphere. Small shops, art galleries, and cozy cafes alternate with one another. The Lange Hezelstraat, in particular, is a treat for lovers of craftsmanship, vintage, and delicious food.

Kronenburgerpark is an oasis of greenery in the middle of the city. With its ponds, towers, and swans, it is a lovely spot for a picnic or a short walk. And as a bonus: from the old city wall, you have a beautiful view of the lower city.
Every evening at sunset, a special ceremony takes place on the Oversteekbrug: the Sunset March. Veterans walk in silence as the 48 lanterns light up two by two, in memory of the 48 Allied soldiers who fell here in 1944. A subdued, impressive experience that you will not soon forget.
The Stevenskerk has towered over the city for centuries and is not only a landmark but also a place full of stories. Inside, a serene tranquility prevails, with impressive vaults, natural light, and centuries-old details that make Nijmegen’s rich history palpable.
An absolute highlight is the König Organ – a monumental 18th-century Baroque organ famous for its warm, full sound. During concerts, the sound fills the entire church with an almost heavenly atmosphere. The beautiful chandeliers, which are still lit by hand on special occasions, also give the church an almost magical appearance. In addition, (pop) concerts and exhibitions are regularly held there, ensuring that the Stevenskerk remains the beating heart of the city, centuries after its construction.
Nijmegen has a vibrant coffee culture. There are three places you really shouldn’t miss:
☕ Philipse Coffee – Right in the city center, next to the Stevenskerk, you will find Philipse – a cozy living room café in an authentic Canon’s House. Enjoy coffee, lunch, or homemade treats, with a wonderfully cool terrace in the shade of the church during the summer.
☕ Barrio Alto – Tucked away behind the lively Grote Markt lies Barrio Alto – a cozy spot where the scent of freshly baked cake and coffee immediately greets you.
☕ Foxy – Enjoy a beautiful view of the Waal at Foxy Coffee & Concept Store on the lively Waalkade. Coffee, high tea, fresh pastries such as lemon and carrot cake, or a delicious lunch – you’re always in the right place here, whether you want to relax or enjoy each other’s company.
Take the time to enjoy; in Nijmegen, it’s all about slow living.
Nijmegen is bursting with street art – colorful murals, subtle stencil art, and creative graffiti. From the Honig Complex to Van Welderenstraat: you will discover art on the street everywhere. Tip: book a guided street art walking tour to discover the hidden stories behind the works. The combination of history and modern expression makes Nijmegen unique.

Perhaps the biggest reason to come to Nijmegen: the atmosphere. The city feels like a large village, friendly, green, and quirky. People greet you on the street, the terraces are full of life, and there is always something to do: from festivals to food markets and live music. Nijmegen invites you to unwind for a while.
Whether you come for a day of culture, a weekend of fresh air, or a city walk full of flavors and stories, Nijmegen welcomes you with open arms. Put on your walking shoes, load your bag with treats, and let yourself be surprised by the oldest and perhaps the nicest city in the Netherlands.
